Productivity: Calendars

I still use a paper calendar!
calendars (more commonly known as "my brains") earlier this week.

My 31 year old son was over for a visit last weekend, and confessed to me that when he was a kid he used to think it was ridiculous that I carried around a planner-but now, he has begun using one too, or he will forget important appointments.

In my 20's, I used to think lists and calendars were for sissies-and were a sign of weakness-but now I understand that there is a practical purpose and actual science at work here. The reason we need to use reminders, lists and calendars is due to the natural limitations of our brains.

For as complex and amazing as our brains are, our actual working memory can only remember 4 things at once.

While our basic working memory capacity does vary among individuals, interestingly, those who test well on working memory tasks also seem to do well at learning, problem solving and reading comprehension. We also know that people can improve their working-memory capacity with training.

In terms of productivity, calendars and lists should be prioritized rather than exhaustive. Managing your calendar properly, whether you are a entrepreneur, an employee, a student or a homemaker, can eliminate stress and improve work flow, taking you from "busy" & "procrastination" to "productive" and "efficient".

What tricks do you use to remember appointments, complete tasks or to just stay more organized in general? Please post them in the comments below!
